"Before and Beyond Port."
The Douro Valley produces some of the world's most exciting table wines. It also produces Port. Tonight we taste both — and understand why they're inseparable.
The Niepoort family has been in the Port trade since 1842, but it was Dirk Niepoort — the fifth generation — who quietly revolutionized the Douro in the 1990s by pioneering serious dry table wines when most producers only thought about fortified. His fierce advocacy for indigenous varieties and minimal intervention has reshaped how the world views this ancient valley. This final evening of the series traces the Douro's full arc: from a lively modern white to a Vintage Port that could age for 30 more years. It is the perfect close to a year of discovery.
· Drink Me Branco — Lively and textured with citrus and saline mineral edge, a modern Douro white
· Drink Me Tinto — Fresh and perfumed, red berry and wildflowers, the Douro's elegant side
· Douro Red — Old Vines — Dark fruit, slate, dried herbs, and a firm structure built for time
· Colheita or LBV Port — The bridge: figs, walnuts, and caramel with sweetness kept in check
· Vintage Port — The grand finale: profound, spiced dark fruit with decades of aging ahead
The full story of the Douro Valley in a single evening — and a new appreciation for Port as the natural culmination of a great wine region.
