"Balance, Not Sugar."
German Riesling's reputation for sweetness is a myth. Tonight we're going to prove it — one glass at a time.
Ernst Loosen inherited a neglected family estate in 1988 and turned it into one of Germany's most celebrated names. His old-vine Rieslings — some over 100 years old, rooted in ancient blue slate soils — range from searingly dry to lusciously sweet, but every single one shares the same electric acidity and extraordinary balance. This evening dismantles the biggest misconception in wine: that German Riesling is all sweetness. From a bone-dry GG to a honeyed Spätlese, you'll taste the full spectrum and understand why this is one of the world's greatest white grape varieties.
· Dr. L Dry Riesling — The entry point: lime, mineral freshness, and dangerously drinkable
· Kabinett — Delicate and barely sweet, peach and slate at just 8% alcohol
· Spätlese — Riper and more expressive, apricot and white flowers in perfect harmony
· GG Dry Riesling — Germany's answer to Grand Cru: intense, focused, and bone dry
· Old-Vine or Reserve — Ancient vines, profound depth, the pinnacle of the evening
A new vocabulary for talking about sweetness and acidity — and a German wine you'll want to seek out again.
